Orissa, also known as Odisha or Utkala, is a state situated on the eastern shorelines of India, beside the Bay of Bengal. The capital of the state is Bhubaneswar. Previously, the province was known as Kalinga. The contemporary state was set up in the form of a territory during the British Raj. Orissa is the ninth biggest state in terms of area in India. The city of Cuttack served as the capital of the province for more than 800 years till April 13, 1948 once Bhubaneswar took over as the new capital of the state.

The state of Orissa stretches from 17.49° to 22.34° North latitudes and 81.27° to 87.29° East longitudes. Orissa shares its boundaries with the state of West Bengal in the east and north-east, Chhattisgarh in the west and north-west, Jharkhand in the north, and Andhra Pradesh in the south.

How to Reach Orissa

By Air: There are 16 helipads and 17 airstrips in the state. Bhubaneswar houses the Biju Patnaik International Airport, the principal airport of Odisha and it is being made bigger for housing commercial airliners with two aisles.
