How to Reach Meghalaya

By Air:

There is a tiny airport at Umroi, and the distance from the state capital is 35 km. It lies on the Guwahati-Shillong Highway. The tiny area of the airport works as a hindrance for operating big aircrafts. Tiny aircrafts exclusively fly from Agartala (the capital of the bordering state of Tripura) and Kolkata. A new flight service from Indian Airlines has been launched for three days on a weekly basis from Kolkata to Umroi, and the distance from Shillong is around 20 km. Or else, Borjhar (Assam), is the closest airport, and the distance from Shillong is approximately 124 km.

Air India offers flights joining Mumbai – Kolkata – Guwahati – Bangkok. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, there is flight service available from ATR on Kolkata-Shillong-Kolkata itinerary. MTC bus services are available to Umroi Airport from Shillong. Helicopter services are available from Guwahati to Tura and from Guwahati to Shillong.

By Rail:

There is no railway station in the state. The Cherra Companyganj State Railways was a previous mountain railway operating in the territory. The closest railhead is Guwahati and the distance from Shillong is 103 km. It joins the north-eastern region with the other parts of the nation via a broad gauge railways network. In addition, there are proposals for stretching the railways connection to Byrnihat from Guwahati inside the state and the distance to be covered in this manner is 20 km.

By Road:

The roadways network of Meghalaya covers approximately 4,742 miles or 7,633 km. Out of this 2,293 miles or 3,691 km is coated with blacktop and the rest 2,387 miles or 3,942 km is covered with gravels. The state enjoys access to Mizoram (Aizawl), Silchar (Assam) and Agartala (Tripura) via the National Highways. The travelers have the choice of touring via taxis and privately-operated tourist buses that are available to Shillong from Guwahati, the capital of Assam. The trip will take approximately 3–4 hours time.
