Among these, Bangalore and Mangalore are international airports. Kingfisher Red and Kingfisher Airlines are two important airlines that have their headquarters in Bangalore.
The railway network of Karnataka is quite extensive as well. The head offices of the Southwestern Zone of Indian Railways were shifted to Hubli in 2003. Previously, the railway transport system for the state was divided into Western and Southern Zones. The Southwestern Zone takes care of most of the areas of the state and the rest is served by the Southern Railways. The Konkan Railway serves the seashore areas and it was regarded as the most extensive railways venture in the country for 100 years. Bangalore enjoys good accessibility from different other parts of the state via railways. However, this is not the case for other major towns and cities.
State highways and national highways comprise a considerable portion of the roadways transportation network of Karnataka. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) serves as the main public transportation bureau and it is held by the Government of Karnataka. It is one of the biggest employers in the state, too. It was formed as a result of a merger between The Northwest Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, and the Northeast Karnataka Road Transport Corporation.
