Haryana is a state in Northern India. The state has an extensive history which dates back to the Vedic era. The state of Haryana was created on November 1, 1966 by severing a part of the erstwhile Punjab state. It houses the famous site of Kurukshetra where the epic battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas took place. Because of its huge contribution to the country’s agriculture, Haryana is nicknamed as the Green Land of India. There are many places in the state which formed a part of the Vedic and Indus Valley civilizations. The state houses a number of manufacturing hubs like Yamuna Nagar, Sonipat, Panchkula, Panipat, and Faridabad. The oil refinery at Panipat ranks as the 2nd biggest in Southern Asia. The Indo-Gangetic plain and the sub-Himalayan Terai region comprise the whole state. The word Haryana refers to “The Abode of God” and it was derived from Sanskrit terms Hari (Vishnu, the Hindu deity) and ayana (home).
The state of Haryana is surrounded by land and it comprises a part of northern India. It lies between 30°44′ North latitude and 74°47′ East longitude.
Haryana shares its boundaries with Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in the north, and with Rajasthan in the south and western sides. The Yamuna River demarcates its eastern boundaries with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Delhi, the capital of India shares its boundaries with Haryana on three sides, to the north, south, and west.
There are many things to see and do in Haryana. Chandigarh, the capital of the state, is an impeccably planned city and it is the architectural wonder of Le Corbusier, the French architect. It is a model city and a major transport hub in north India. People also visit the state to see sites like Bhiwani, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Kurukshetra, Rohtak, Sonipat, Hisar and Samalkha.
