The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are an archipelago and are situated at the meeting point of the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. These islands constitute a union territory of India. Despite the fact that this archipelago forms a portion of the Republic of India politically, they are nearer to Thailand and Myanmar in comparison to the land mass of India. The archipelago consists of around 600 islands in all.
The capital of this Indian territory is the town of Port Blair. The overall area of the territory is around 3,117 sq miles or 8,073 km2. Car Nicobar is the capital of Nicobar Islands and is named as Malacca as well.
The distance of Andaman & Nicobar Islands from Aceh in Indonesia is 93 miles or 150 km in the north. The Andaman Sea dissevers the group of islands from Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are made up of two clusters of islands and they are the Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Islands, divided by the 10°N latitude, where the Nicobars lie towards the south and the Andamans lie towards the north of this latitude. The Bay of Bengal lies in the west and the Andaman Sea is situated towards the east. The group of islands is situated between 6° and 14° North latitudes and 92° and 94° East longitudes. The principal island, suitably named as Great Andaman, is split into three parts – South Andaman, North Andaman, and Middle Andaman. Port Blair lies on South Andaman.
Andaman & Nicobar is typically famous for its natural and historical features. The place was severely affected by the tsunami of 2004. Other than the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and Little Andaman, the other tourist draws are doing pretty well. The coral reefs and scenic beaches make it a special tourist draw.
