Chennai International Airport is the major international airport in Tamil Nadu. The airport offers over 169 direct flights to 19 nations on a weekly basis. Following Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, Chennai is the third busiest airport in the country. The percentage of increase in number of passengers is 18% and it also ranks as the 2nd biggest cargo airport in India, following Mumbai. The railways network of Tamil Nadu is quite strong and forms a segment of Southern Railways. The head offices of Southern Railways are based in Chennai, the state capital. The network is quite widespread and covers a significant portion of the Southern Peninsula of India, encompassing states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry (Puducherry,) a tiny part of Andhra Pradesh and a tiny part of Karnataka. Karnataka is linked with Tamil Nadu via NH 207, NH 67, and NH 209. NH 219, NH 205, and NH 234 join the state with Andhra Pradesh. At the same time, the state is joined with Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh via NH 4. Andhra Pradesh and Orissa are linked with Tamil Nadu via NH 5. Tamil Nadu enjoys connectivity with Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka via NH 7. Pondicherry and Karnataka are connected with Tamil Nadu via NH 66.
State highways are those roads which join major towns, district headquarters, as well as the National Highways in TN and bordering states. The state highways system of
TN consists of seven circles and they are Coimbatore, Chennai, Trichy, Salem, Thirunelveli, Madurai, and Tamil Nadu.
