Tamil Nadu is one of the two southernmost states in India, the other being Kerala. It is one of the 28 states of the country. Also known as the Land of the Tamils, Tamil Nadu is famous for its historic Hindu temples and the Bharata Natyam dance variety. Carnatic music and Tamil cuisines also make the state one of the favorite tourist destinations in Southern India. The state housed a number of empires including the Chola, Pandya, Chera, and Pallava empires that prospered during the ancient and middle age in India.

The state is situated in the southernmost point of the Indian Peninsula and shares its boundaries with the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh and the union territory of Pondicherry. It is edged by the Anamalai Hills, the Nilgiri, and Kerala to the west, Eastern Ghats to the north, by the Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar to the southeast, the Bay of Bengal to the east, and the Indian Ocean to the south.
